The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a march to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, July 13, to demand an explanation over the arrest of one of its leading members, Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
The party says the protest is intended to seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding the arrest, which it believes raises concerns about due process and the treatment of opposition figures.
Speaking to Channel One News on Sunday, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, claimed that Mr Aboagye was arrested without receiving any prior invitation or notification from EOCO regarding an investigation.
According to him, the party is concerned that state institutions are increasingly being used to intimidate members of the political opposition.
“Miracles has not received any invitation from EOCO. He has not been informed of any wrongdoing. He has not been told that he is under any form of investigation,” Nana Boakye said.
He stressed that while the NPP fully supports accountability and would not shield any member found to have breached the law, investigations must be conducted in accordance with established legal procedures.
Nana Boakye maintained that the party’s decision to march to EOCO was aimed at demanding transparency rather than obstructing any legitimate investigation.
The planned demonstration follows allegations made by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, who claimed in a Facebook post that Dennis Miracles Aboagye was arrested by officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office with the assistance of Immigration officials at the Accra International Airport.
According to the post, Mr Aboagye’s legal team has been denied access to him, his whereabouts remain unknown and no formal charges have been communicated.
The claims have heightened concerns within the party, with senior officials calling on EOCO to publicly explain the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
As of the time of publication, the Economic and Organised Crime Office had not issued an official statement confirming the arrest or responding to the allegations made by the NPP.
The planned march is expected to draw party supporters and executives as the NPP seeks answers over the incident while calling for adherence to due process and the rule of law.
