Parliament reconvenes today, Tuesday, May 27, 2025, ushering in the Second Meeting of the First Session of the 9th Parliament, with a renewed emphasis on legislative oversight, fiscal accountability, and political positioning ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The House returns from its Easter break with a packed agenda, including debates, committee work, and a crucial presentation in August: the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review by the Finance Minister.
Speaking to Citi News, Second Deputy Majority Whip Richard Acheampong highlighted the importance of ministerial reporting as Parliament evaluates governmental progress and policy direction.
“This session will give ministers the opportunity to brief Parliament on their progress over the last quarter and share forward-looking plans. The mid-year budget review in August will be particularly critical,” Acheampong noted.
Meanwhile, the Minority Caucus has signaled a sharpened focus on oversight and political readiness. During a retreat held over the weekend, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said the caucus was not only gearing up for robust scrutiny of government actions but also preparing to lead Ghana in the next political cycle.
“We are intensifying our watchdog role in Parliament while sending a clear signal—we are ready for leadership come 2028,” he said.
With both sides of the House poised for an active session, political observers anticipate heated debates and strategic maneuvering as Ghana’s legislative body resumes full operation.
