The Philadelphia 76ers will have to navigate a critical stretch of the season without All-Star forward Paul George, who has been suspended for 25 games by the NBA for violating the league’s anti-drug program. The specifics of the violation have not been disclosed.
In a statement to ESPN, George acknowledged taking an “improper medication” while seeking treatment for a personal issue related to mental health. He expressed regret and accepted full responsibility for his actions.
“This was a mistake, and I apologize to my teammates, the organization, and the fans,” George said.
The suspension will sideline George until March 25, during which time the 76ers will play 25 games — a period that includes a stretch critical to solidifying their position in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Philadelphia is currently sixth in the East with a 26-21 record, and the team is 10-10 in games without George this season.
The absence of the 35-year-old veteran, who averages 16 points per game, comes after a challenging first year in Philadelphia, marred by injuries and inconsistent play. Last season, George described his debut with the Sixers as “rock bottom” for his career.
Financially, the suspension will cost George roughly $11.7 million, a portion of which could help the Sixers move closer to avoiding the luxury tax.
Despite the setback, the 76ers have shown resilience this season, fueled by the scoring of Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and rising rookie VJ Edgecombe. Still, George’s suspension raises questions about the team’s strategy ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline and whether Philadelphia can maintain momentum toward the playoffs without one of its primary scorers.
George signed a four-year, $212 million contract before the 2024 season, but injuries and now suspension have kept him from fully contributing to a team eager to make a deep postseason run.
The 76ers will hope to adapt quickly, relying on Embiid, Maxey, and their supporting cast to navigate the stretch of games that will define their playoff positioning.
