Phil Foden says he is determined to revive his career and repay Manchester City’s faith in him after beginning what he describes as a “fresh start” under new manager Enzo Maresca.
The 26-year-old midfielder has committed his long-term future to City by signing a new four-year contract until 2030, despite a difficult spell that has seen his form decline over the past two seasons.
Foden, who was the Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Player of the Year in 2023-24, has struggled to replicate that campaign, scoring 10 goals last season and failing to find the net in his last 31 appearances for club and country.
He said the club’s decision to offer him a new deal had boosted his confidence and renewed his motivation.
“It has made me feel relaxed and I can just concentrate on being the best version of me,” Foden said.
“It is nice to see the support from the club and it means a lot. It’s about time I try and repay them and give back to the club.”
Foden is hoping the arrival of Enzo Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola this summer, will mark a turning point in his career.
The England international already has a strong relationship with the Italian coach, having previously worked with him during Maresca’s time in City’s academy and first-team set-up.
“Very good – a fresh start, a new manager and up to now, really enjoying it,” Foden said.
“I know Enzo from before, so that definitely helps. I know him quite well and what he is about.”
Maresca has made it clear that Foden remains a key figure in his plans and has pledged to help him rediscover his best form.
“Phil is very important,” the City manager said.
“It is my duty to help him be the Phil we all want. First of all, he needs to be happy and enjoy football.”
Foden endured a frustrating 2025-26 campaign, with injuries and off-field issues affecting his performances. He also suffered the disappointment of being left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, where the Three Lions reached the semi-finals.
The midfielder revealed that Maresca personally contacted him after the omission to check on his wellbeing.
“He reached out just after to see if I was OK, which was very nice of him,” Foden said.
“He cares about everyone and wants to have a good relationship with the team.”
Now fully fit, Foden believes Manchester City can challenge for every major trophy next season despite the departure of Guardiola and other senior figures.
“I think we can win everything,” he said. “We have still got an unbelievable team.”
Maresca is set to take charge of City for the first time in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong, where Foden is expected to begin the next chapter of his career.
