Renowned heart surgeon and former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has stirred political waters with a stinging critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership, calling for a sweeping resignation of the party’s top brass following their defeat in the 2024 general elections.
In a candid interview on Nhyira FM in Kumasi, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng did not mince words, labeling the NPP’s electoral performance as “shameful” and unprecedented. He squarely placed the blame on the party’s leadership, whom he accused of failing both the party and the Ghanaian people.
“All the executives must resign,” he declared. “They led the party into an embarrassing defeat. If we don’t remove the demons occupying these leadership positions, we’re heading for continued failure.”
His comments add to growing discontent within the NPP rank-and-file, as the party struggles to regroup after a painful loss that saw them cede the presidency and lose a significant number of parliamentary seats.
The former minister didn’t spare former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo either, criticizing his leadership style and accusing him of being “close-minded” and unwilling to listen to dissenting views — a quality he believes contributed to the party’s downfall.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s outspoken remarks highlight deepening cracks within the NPP, as calls for internal restructuring and leadership renewal continue to gain momentum.
Observers say his intervention could inspire similar voices within the party to speak out, potentially setting the stage for a major shake-up ahead of the party’s next national delegates conference.
As the NPP navigates the post-election storm, the question remains: will the leadership heed the call for change, or risk deepening the internal discontent threatening to fracture the party from within?
