A torrential rainstorm accompanied by strong winds has caused damage at Lume Avete in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region after a large mahogany tree was uprooted and fell onto nearby structures.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, left parts of the community counting losses as the fallen tree damaged several buildings and property, although officials say the full extent of destruction is yet to be determined.
The storm triggered panic among residents as heavy rainfall and strong winds swept through the area, forcing people to seek safety while the weather persisted.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by the Municipal Director, Mr Daniel Gidi, visited the scene to assess the situation and gather details to guide possible emergency response measures.
Mr Gidi urged residents to remain alert during severe weather conditions and to take precautionary steps to protect lives and property, especially in communities prone to storm-related incidents.
Assembly Member for the area, Mr Jacob Nyasorgbor, also appealed for calm, assuring residents that authorities were working to assess the damage and provide support where necessary.
No casualties had been reported as of press time, while NADMO continues to monitor the situation and evaluate the level of impact caused by the storm.
