Alhaji Baba Alhassan Watara, Chief of the Sunyani Wangara Community, has issued a stern warning to Muslim youth regarding LGBTQ+ practices, condemning them as immoral and contrary to Islamic teachings. Speaking during the closing ceremonies of the Kurubi Festival, a significant cultural celebration for the Wangara community, he emphasized that such practices are not only forbidden in Islam but are also an abomination. He further warned that those who engage in these behaviors would face divine judgment and Allah’s wrath unless they repent.
The Kurubi Festival, which marked the end of the Ramadan fasting period, brought together members of the Wangara community from various walks of life. The event, which celebrated cultural traditions, also provided an opportunity for men to select wives, adhering to the community’s customs.
During his address, Nana Yusif Fanyinama III, the National Wangara Chief and Acting President of the National Council of Zongo Chiefs, explained the deeper significance of the festival. He noted that the name “Kurubi,” which translates to “brighteners before Allah” in Arabic, reflects the community’s commitment to spiritual purity and adherence to Islamic principles. The festival serves as a time for reflection, renewal of faith, and an expression of gratitude to Allah for strength throughout Ramadan.
Nana Fanyinama also emphasized that the Kurubi Festival is a non-partisan occasion, uniting the community through shared values and traditions. Despite the serious social and religious issues raised during the festival, the event underscored the importance of cultural preservation and unity within the Wangara community.
