Ghana’s Supreme Court is set to launch celebrations marking its 150th anniversary on April 16, 2026, with a full month of activities scheduled from July 1 to July 31, 2026.
The programme, titled “Supreme Court@150”, will feature lectures, symposia, legal outreach initiatives, Moot Court competitions, as well as sporting events, a durbar, formal dinner, and a thanksgiving service. The celebration will be held under the theme: “Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present and Defining the Future.”
Justice Richard Adjei-Frimpong, Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, highlighted the Court’s evolution since its establishment under the Supreme Court Ordinance of 1876, noting its resilience through periods of political instability, military interventions, and constitutional challenges.
He underscored the Court’s role in shaping Ghana’s legal and democratic landscape, citing landmark rulings on Article 181(5) of the 1992 Constitution, expanding voting rights to prisoners, and removing police permit requirements for demonstrations. The Court has also successfully resolved two presidential election disputes, contributing to political stability.
The anniversary will offer an opportunity for reflection, learning, and strategic planning to address contemporary challenges in the legal and judicial sectors. Justice Adjei-Frimpong called on the public and media to actively participate in the celebrations, emphasizing that the milestone is of national significance.
