A dispute over an unpaid GH¢50 debt for Tramadol has resulted in the death of a man in Tamale, prompting swift police action and multiple arrests.
According to the leader of the IGP Special Operations Team, Bawah Abdul Jalil, the victim allegedly purchased two 120mg tablets of the opioid painkiller at GH¢25 each but failed to settle the payment, leading to a violent confrontation.
Police say two suspects — Abubakari Mohammed and Rasheed Sumaila — assaulted the victim during the dispute. The victim later died from the attack.
Abubakari Mohammed was arrested on the Accra-Kumasi Road while attempting to flee, while Rasheed Sumaila was subsequently apprehended. Three additional individuals, including Sumaila’s father, were also arrested for allegedly obstructing police officers in the course of their duties.
During interrogation, Abubakari Mohammed reportedly admitted that the altercation stemmed from the unpaid cost of the Tramadol tablets.
DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil further disclosed that the operation formed part of broader swoop exercises targeting the sale and possession of illicit substances. Six more suspects were arrested for alleged possession and sale of suspected Indian hemp and opioids.
The deceased’s body has been preserved pending further investigations, while seized exhibits have been retained for forensic examination as authorities continue their probe into the incident.
