Organisers of the Tampico Accra Inter-City Marathon have increased the incentives for this year’s competition, with the overall winner set to receive a prize package worth $4,000.
Race Director of Medivents, Mr William Ezah, announced the package at a press conference in Kumasi, saying the winner of the 21-kilometre race would receive GH¢18,000 in cash, in addition to a $2,500 travel package to compete in an international marathon in January 2027.
He said the enhanced package represented an increase of more than 100 per cent over the previous prize package, attributing the improvement to the support of soft drinks company Tampico Ghana.
The second-placed runner will receive GH¢10,000, together with certificates and medals, while the third-placed participant will take home GH¢5,000 and other gifts from sponsors.
The organisers have also made provisions for wheelchair athletes competing in the 21-kilometre para race.
The winner of the wheelchair category will receive GH¢5,000, with the second and third-placed participants receiving GH¢2,500 and GH¢2,000 respectively.
Mr Ezah said consolation cash prizes would also be awarded to other participants, while all runners would receive medals for taking part in the event.
The marathon is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at the Trust Sports Emporium, popularly known as the Bukom Boxing Arena, in Accra.
Participants will have the option of competing in either the 21-kilometre or five-kilometre race.
According to the organisers, the event is expected to bring together elite and amateur runners, as well as members of fitness clubs, gyms and other social groups.
