A 37-year-old man has been remanded into police custody by the Tema Circuit Court ‘A’ after he was found in possession of a large quantity of suspected narcotic substances concealed in a container truck.
The accused, Bismarck Kpormeno, is alleged to have been transporting 12 sacks and 80 parcels of compressed plant material suspected to be Indian hemp when he was arrested by police.
He appeared before Her Honour Maame Yaa Mensah but did not enter a plea, as investigations into the matter are still ongoing. He is expected to return to court on June 16, 2026.
According to a statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Tema Regional Police Command, the arrest was carried out on May 31, 2026, by officers from the Tema Highway Patrol Unit after the suspect allegedly failed to comply with instructions to stop during a routine operation.
Police say the suspect was driving a Hyundai Mighty II container truck when officers attempted to intercept him. He allegedly tried to escape but was pursued and arrested at Bondase.
A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of the suspected substances hidden inside the container and wrapped in sellotape.
Preliminary investigations suggest the consignment was loaded at Kpeve in the Volta Region and was being transported to Ada in the Greater Accra Region.
The police further indicated that the suspect is assisting with investigations while the vehicle and the seized items have been retained for evidential purposes.
The Tema Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other related crimes, urging the public to support law enforcement by providing timely and credible information to aid in crime prevention and detection.
