With the recent transition of Tema Port into a fully operational 24-hour service hub, the Tema Regional Police Command has stepped up strategic collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to fortify port security and safeguard growing economic activity.
In a high-level security engagement, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Barnabas Nambont Nasumong, Tema Regional Police Commander, led a delegation to the GPHA headquarters to engage with Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, Director General of GPHA, on the evolving security needs of the port under its new operating regime.
The expanded round-the-clock operations at Ghana’s busiest seaport are expected to spur increased traffic, commercial activity, and logistical movement—factors that heighten the risk of criminal infiltration and require a more responsive, coordinated security posture.
“The 24-hour activity at the port brings not only economic benefits but also demands more vigilant law enforcement. We are committed to ensuring that this increased movement of people and goods is not exploited by criminal elements,” DCOP Nasumong stated.
He disclosed that the Police Service had already bolstered its visibility, patrol operations, and rapid response capacity within the port enclave and surrounding communities to counter potential threats.
The GPHA leadership welcomed the police’s proactive stance, with Brigadier General Tanye-Kulono commending the synergy between port security and regional police forces. He noted that sustained cooperation would be pivotal to maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a secure destination for international shipping and trade.
“The safety of port users—both local and international—is central to the success of our 24-hour operations. The police presence not only deters criminality but reassures our clients that Tema Port is open for business under safe conditions,” the GPHA Director General said.
Also present at the strategic dialogue were ASP Peter Boakye, Staff Officer to the Regional Police Commander; Dr. Kingsley Antwi-Boasiako, GPHA’s General Manager for Marketing and Corporate Affairs; and Mr. David Songotu, General Manager for Risk.
As Tema Port evolves into a 24/7 logistics hub within West Africa, both the GPHA and Ghana Police Service appear aligned in their vision—ensuring that security infrastructure keeps pace with operational expansion, safeguarding investments and promoting economic resilience.
