The Port of Tema is set to strengthen its capacity to accommodate larger vessels following the completion of dredging works that have deepened selected berths from 11 metres to 14 metres.
The development formed part of ongoing infrastructure improvements inspected by the Board of Directors of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), led by its Chairman, John Asiedu Nketiah.
The inspection also covered the rehabilitation of the port’s breakwaters, a project expected to improve the facility’s infrastructure and support efficient maritime operations.
During the visit, GPHA’s General Manager of Engineering, Ing. Komla Ofori, briefed the Board on the scope and progress of the projects.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, Mr Asiedu Nketiah expressed satisfaction with the completed dredging works and the progress of the breakwater rehabilitation, particularly the advanced technology being deployed.
He said the breakwater project was progressing according to schedule and was expected to be completed and handed over within a month.
The improvements are expected to enhance the port’s ability to receive larger vessels safely, potentially increasing its capacity to serve shipping lines and other players in the maritime industry.
GPHA Director-General, Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, said he was confident that the completion of the projects would strengthen the Authority’s operational efficiency and commercial prospects.
He explained that the upgraded infrastructure would enable larger vessels to berth safely at the Port of Tema, positioning the facility to better meet the needs of the maritime sector.
The breakwater rehabilitation project is being undertaken by GYTD Group Limited.
The infrastructure works form part of efforts to improve the Port of Tema’s operational capabilities and support its role in Ghana’s maritime trade.
