The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) has announced plans to overhaul its existing sanitation management contracts by September 2025, as part of a strategic initiative to improve environmental cleanliness and enhance public health across the municipality.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh revealed the Assembly’s intention during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) following the first ordinary general assembly meeting of the second session of the third assembly.
Mr. Totimeh said the Assembly is currently working with six sanitation companies, but a contract review is necessary to improve performance and responsiveness. He disclosed that TWMA is in the process of rezoning the municipality into smaller sanitation management units to increase oversight, accountability, and service efficiency.
“This reform is in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s national vision to uphold proper sanitation practices and enhance living conditions for all Ghanaians,” Mr. Totimeh explained.
The MCE stressed that beyond contract reforms, the Assembly is intensifying efforts to enforce sanitation bylaws and educate the public on best practices. He warned that eateries, pubs, and bars found violating sanitation regulations—particularly those discharging effluents into public drains—would face prosecution.
He urged residents and households to register with certified sanitation companies for proper waste disposal and tasked assembly members to lead sanitation awareness efforts in their respective electoral areas.
Mr. Totimeh also expressed concern about the growing challenge of liquid waste in parts of the municipality, pointing to aging and inadequate sewer lines as a major issue. He called on stakeholders and private investors to partner with the Assembly in identifying innovative waste management solutions.
“Our doors are open to partnerships that will support infrastructure upgrades and sustainable sanitation systems,” he stated.
The proposed sanitation reforms form part of a broader campaign by the TWMA to modernize municipal services and respond to the increasing demand for cleaner, healthier environments in rapidly urbanizing communities.
