— Calls for urgent investigation and accountability
The Member of Parliament for Tempane Constituency, Hon. Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has strongly condemned the recent shooting of immigration officers at Nagani and the alleged military assault on civilians in Basyonde, both of which occurred within her constituency over the past 24 hours.
In a statement issued on November 3, 2025, the MP expressed deep sorrow and concern over the tragic events, describing them as “unfortunate and deeply troubling.”
According to her, unknown gunmen attacked two immigration officers at Nagani on November 2, 2025, resulting in the death of one officer and injury to another. She extended her condolences to the family of the deceased, the injured officer, and the entire Immigration Service, calling the act “reprehensible, unacceptable, and a direct affront to the rule of law.”
However, Hon. Akanvariba expressed equal concern over reports that soldiers invaded Basyonde on November 3, 2025, allegedly brutalizing innocent residents who were going about their normal daily activities. Several civilians reportedly sustained injuries, leaving the community gripped with fear and insecurity.
“I categorically state that such military action against innocent civilians is unacceptable and unjustifiable,” she stated, adding that while the state has a duty to maintain law and order, it “must not punish the innocent for the actions of a few.”
The Tempane legislator has therefore called on the government, the Ghana Armed Forces, and relevant security agencies to:
1. Conduct a transparent and urgent investigation into both the Nagani shooting and the Basyonde military operation.
2. Ensure that those responsible for the acts of violence, whether civilians or security officers, are held accountable under the law.
3. Restore trust, security, and peace in the affected communities through lawful means and dialogue.
Hon. Akanvariba assured her constituents that their safety, dignity, and rights remain her top priority and urged them to stay calm and law-abiding as investigations continue.
“Violence of this nature has no place in our society,” she emphasized, pledging to follow up on the incidents to ensure justice is served.
The incidents have sparked outrage among residents, with many calling for swift government action to prevent further escalation of tensions in the Tempane area.
