The Assemblyman for the Tengvielli Electoral Area in the Sissala East Municipality, Mr. Dramani Moro, has called on the municipal authorities to urgently consider constructing a dam to address the severe water shortages affecting his community.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a borehole drilling ceremony at Tengvielli, Mr. Moro highlighted the ongoing water crisis, explaining that the nine existing boreholes in the area are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of the local population.
Long Walk for Water
According to Mr. Moro, women in the community often walk several kilometers daily to fetch water for household use, with some traveling up to 15 kilometers to neighboring Kassana and Kanzion in Burkina Faso. This daily struggle for water, he said, is taking a significant toll on the well-being and productivity of the community, particularly women and children.
Low Water Table Compounds Crisis
Mr. Moro also pointed out that the area’s low water table has made it difficult to drill successful boreholes, a concern he has previously raised with the Municipal Engineer without a clear solution in sight.
Electrification Challenges
Beyond the water crisis, Mr. Moro noted that only four of the nine communities in the Tengvielli electoral area have access to electricity, leaving the remaining five, including Katinia, Tanla, and Kunsola, in the dark. He promised to continue lobbying for both water and electrification projects to improve the living conditions of his constituents.
Community Support and Future Plans
At the same event, a local church, which requested anonymity, drilled a new borehole for the Fulbe community in Tengvielli, offering much-needed relief to residents. Mr. Iddrisu Amadu, the Fulani chief from Pieng, expressed gratitude for the gesture, promising to establish a water user committee to ensure proper maintenance of the facility.
Mr. Moro also expressed his intention to reach out to non-governmental organizations to provide additional hand pump boreholes, similar to the support currently being extended to the Fulbe community, as part of broader efforts to improve water access in the Tengvielli area.
He reiterated his appeal for a dam, stressing that a more sustainable water source is urgently needed to address the long-term needs of the area’s growing population.
