In the bustling suburb of Nima, Accra, a commercial minibus—commonly known as a “trotro”—veered off the road late Wednesday evening and collided with the perimeter wall of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s private residence, raising fresh concerns over road safety in the area.
Eyewitnesses report that the driver lost control while trying to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle on the narrow street. The trotro carrying several passengers then smashed into the fence wall, causing noticeable damage but, fortunately, no serious injuries.
Security personnel at the former president’s home quickly secured the scene, and the Ghana Police Service promptly launched an investigation. Initial findings indicate that excessive speed and possible brake failure may have been factors in the accident. The driver has been taken into custody for questioning.
Though former President Akufo-Addo was not present at the time, the incident has sparked renewed calls from residents and local stakeholders for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and traffic authorities to introduce stricter controls and speed-calming measures along this stretch of road—already notorious for minor crashes.
“Several accidents have happened here before. It’s a risky road with many pedestrians and vehicles. Authorities must act to prevent a tragedy,” one resident said.
Repairs to the damaged section of the wall are slated to begin shortly, as the community urges swift action to improve road infrastructure and safety enforcement in Nima.
This event underscores the ongoing challenges faced by many Accra neighborhoods grappling with traffic management and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to protect lives and property.
