The Kaneshie District Court has granted bail to two women, Naomi Tettey and Hanatu Mohammed, who stand accused of obstructing police officers and assaulting an officer during a drug-related arrest in the Nima area.
Naomi Tettey, a 50-year-old trader, was granted bail set at GH₵30,000 with two sureties, while 24-year-old nurse Hanatu Mohammed was released on GH₵10,000 bail, also with two sureties. Both women pleaded not guilty to the charges against them and are due back in court on June 19, 2025.
According to Police Chief Inspector Achana Apewah, the incident occurred on May 5, 2025, when Detective Chief Inspector Prince Wisdom Sotamah, Station Officer at Nima Divisional CID, led a patrol investigating a report of causing harm. The police discovered a young man allegedly selling substances suspected to be Indian hemp. During the arrest and search, 20 wraps of the suspected drug and an undisclosed amount of money were recovered.
Tettey reportedly intervened by seizing the seized items and fleeing the scene. When apprehended by the officers and asked to return the items, she allegedly refused, assaulting Detective Sotamah by slapping him multiple times and biting his arm, causing injuries. She also reportedly shouted for assistance, drawing a crowd that tried to attack the officers.
Mohammed is accused of encouraging Tettey to resist returning the seized items and attempting to prevent her arrest. Investigations indicate that both women may have supplied the drugs to the initial suspect.
In court, the defense lawyers argued for bail on humanitarian grounds, noting Tettey’s medical needs and Mohammed’s academic commitments, highlighting that Mohammed risks missing upcoming exams. Both defendants assured the court they have credible sureties.
The police continue to investigate the case, which underscores ongoing challenges in addressing drug-related crimes and community resistance during law enforcement operations in the region.
