The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has defended the medical care provided to the late mother of Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson, stating that allegations made by the comedian on social media do not accurately reflect the facts of the case.
In a statement issued on August 5, 2026, the hospital said it had reviewed the concerns raised by Mr Blackson and found that his public account contained “numerous inaccuracies.”
Mr Blackson had posted a video on August 4 in which he criticised the hospital over the treatment of his 83-year-old mother, who died at the facility on July 16, 2026. He alleged that she was repeatedly misdiagnosed, received poor care and that some hospital staff appeared more concerned about payments than her wellbeing.
UGMC expressed sympathy to the bereaved family but rejected the allegations.
“We wish to state unequivocally that the facts presented by Mr. Blackson on social media contain numerous inaccuracies and do not accurately reflect the events that transpired in the provision of medical care,” the hospital said.
According to the medical centre, the patient was referred from another hospital and received treatment at UGMC from May 27 to July 16, 2026, a period of approximately eight weeks.
The hospital declined to provide details of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment or medical records, explaining that it was bound by legal and ethical obligations to protect patient confidentiality even after death.
“Out of respect for the dignity of the deceased and the privacy of her family, we will not disclose or discuss in the public domain the details of any patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records, or account of care,” the statement added.
UGMC maintained that clinical decisions at the facility are made by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with accepted medical standards and in the best interests of patients.
It also rejected suggestions that financial considerations influence medical treatment, saying billing and financial procedures are handled separately from clinical care.
On allegations that a staff member assaulted Mr Blackson’s sister during the family’s interactions with the hospital, UGMC said the matter had been referred to law enforcement authorities and declined further comment while investigations are ongoing.
The medical centre said it remained open to engaging with the family through appropriate channels and assured the public that any specific complaints of staff misconduct would be investigated and referred to the relevant authorities where necessary.
UGMC also encouraged patients and members of the public with concerns about services provided by the hospital to report them through its Client Services Unit for review and resolution.
