Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has named Mr Emmanuel Sackey as its new Group Head of Treasury in a strategic move aimed at deepening its capabilities in financial markets and advancing its ongoing transformation agenda.
The bank says the appointment is part of a broader leadership restructuring designed to strengthen key business areas and position UMB for sustained growth in an increasingly competitive banking environment.
Mr Sackey brings more than 20 years of experience in treasury management and financial markets across Ghana and several African countries. His expertise spans liquidity management, foreign exchange trading, banking operations, and regulatory compliance.
Before joining UMB, he held senior executive roles at United Bank for Africa, where he served as Country Treasurer for Ghana and Regional Treasurer for Anglophone West Africa, as well as Eastern and Southern Africa. In those roles, he was responsible for implementing group treasury strategies and strengthening risk and governance systems across multiple markets.
He also previously led a major turnaround of a treasury operation in Tanzania, transforming it from a loss-making unit into a profitable division, recording strong annual growth through restructuring and improved market strategies.
At earlier stages of his career, Mr Sackey worked with Bank of Africa Ghana and Amalgamated Bank Ghana, where he developed foundational experience in treasury operations and financial markets.
Commenting on the appointment, UMB Managing Director Philip Oti-Mensah said Mr Sackey’s experience and technical expertise will significantly enhance the bank’s competitiveness.
He noted that the appointment reflects UMB’s ambition to strengthen liquidity management, improve market positioning, and deliver long-term value to clients and stakeholders.
Mr Sackey is a Chartered Banker with the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana, and holds an MBA from the University of South Wales. He also earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from KNUST and is a graduate of PRESEC, Legon. In addition, he holds certifications in financial markets from Yale University and the ACI Dealing Certificate.
UMB says the appointment reinforces its commitment to investing in high-level expertise as it expands its presence across key sectors of Ghana’s financial system.
