At the recent Demo Day of the Inclusive Insurance Innovation Challenge (3ic), Dr. Amina Sammo, representing UNDP Ghana, underscored the transformative potential of insurance beyond mere protection — positioning it as a critical driver for sustainable development.
Hosted in collaboration with the National Insurance Commission, the event showcased how innovative insurance solutions are reshaping Ghana’s financial landscape to better serve marginalized groups such as informal sector workers, smallholder farmers, and women entrepreneurs.
Highlighting UNDP Ghana’s Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF), active since 2022, Dr. Sammo emphasized the programme’s role in closing the insurance coverage gap and boosting resilience against economic, health, and climate-related risks.
The startups and fintech firms featured at the event demonstrated how tailored, accessible insurance products can empower vulnerable populations by providing safety nets that support livelihoods and foster economic stability.
Attendees from government bodies, financial institutions, and academia praised these initiatives for advancing financial inclusion and embedding risk management into national development frameworks.
By promoting innovative, scalable insurance models, UNDP Ghana and its partners are driving a shift in how risk protection contributes to the country’s broader goals — ensuring inclusive growth and reinforcing community resilience amid emerging challenges.
