Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang visited the scene of the tragic building collapse at the Accra New Town Experimental School on Monday, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Accompanied by senior officials, the Vice President was briefed by personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Interior Ministry, and other emergency services involved in the rescue and recovery efforts.
The collapsed structure, an unfinished multi-storey Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) project initiated in 2012, gave way on Sunday while worshippers were gathered inside, resulting in three fatalities — two women and one man — and injuries to at least 20 others.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang inspected the debris firsthand and conveyed the Government’s condolences to the affected families, assuring that a thorough investigation would determine the cause of the collapse.
Following the site visit, the Vice President proceeded to the 37 Military Hospital, where 13 victims had been admitted. She interacted with patients and medical personnel, receiving updates on treatment efforts. By Monday morning, six of the injured had been discharged.
Authorities continue to coordinate rescue, treatment, and investigative operations, emphasizing the urgent need to assess structural safety in unfinished public infrastructure projects.
