The proactive actions of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited’s management and security personnel led to the swift arrest and sentencing of an employee involved in stealing electrical cables valued at over GH¢137,000, safeguarding company assets and sending a strong message against internal theft.
Samuel Agyiri, a 28-year-old pump mechanic, was sentenced by the Tarkwa Circuit Court to five years imprisonment with hard labour after pleading guilty to damaging and stealing electrical cables belonging to his employer.
The theft attempt unfolded on March 11, 2025, when the company’s powerhouse manager, Peter Adakabilla, noticed Agyiri repeatedly loitering around restricted areas without clear purpose. Despite initial warnings and reassignment to other duties, Agyiri returned and was eventually spotted pushing a wheelbarrow suspiciously toward the factory fence.
Alerted by the manager’s suspicions, the company’s security officer, Aziz Yakubu, coordinated a pursuit that led to Agyiri’s arrest. Upon apprehension, Agyiri confessed to stealing cables and directed officers to their hiding place in a nearby bush, enabling recovery of the stolen items.
During the trial, Agyiri cited financial difficulties as his motivation but was nonetheless convicted. The presiding judge ordered that the recovered cables be returned to the company, reinforcing the importance of protecting corporate property.
The case highlights the crucial role vigilant management and security teams play in protecting assets and ensuring operational integrity in the industrial sector. Samatex’s swift response serves as a deterrent to theft and strengthens community trust in lawful and ethical workplace practices.
