Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, turned his birthday into an act of service on Sunday, September 21, when he celebrated the day — which coincided with Founders’ Day — by donating to the Children’s Ward of the Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH).
Instead of hosting a private celebration, the Minister chose to mark the occasion with patients, families, and health workers. His donation included 50 packs of bottled water, 30 packs of assorted soft drinks, toiletries, and GH¢5,000 in cash.
In a more personal gesture, Mr. Gunu pledged to fund 50 percent of the treatment cost for four children currently battling cancer at the facility. He also presented GH¢2,000 to nurses on the ward in appreciation of their sacrifice and dedication.
Explaining his decision, Mr. Gunu said it was important to extend love to vulnerable children and encourage healthcare professionals who continue to serve under challenging conditions.
The Chief Executive Officer of HTH, Dr. Hintermann K.K. Mbroh, praised the Minister’s intervention, saying it was not only a boost to the morale of health workers but also a source of hope for families struggling with the burden of treatment.
“This act of kindness is a reminder that leadership is about compassion and solidarity,” Dr. Mbroh remarked, noting that such gestures bring relief and encouragement to both patients and caregivers.
By aligning his birthday celebration with Founders’ Day, Mr. Gunu sought to send a broader message — that service to humanity and support for the vulnerable are values worth building the nation on.
