The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has issued a rallying call to Ghana and neighboring West African nations to join forces in resolving long-standing payment challenges threatening the region’s energy supply.
At a high-level meeting of the West African Gas Pipeline Committee of Ministers held in Accra, WAPCo’s Managing Director, Michelle Burkett, warned that financial instability continues to undermine consistent gas flow—placing the sub-region’s industrial and power sectors at risk.
“Although we’ve made significant progress with improved gas deliveries from Nigeria, a substantial supply-demand gap persists,” Burkett stated. “It is crucial that we collaborate to secure a reliable minimum base load and ensure financial commitments are honored.”
Burkett emphasized that sustained gas availability depends not only on supply logistics but also on dependable financial frameworks among partner countries. Without coordinated action, she warned, the dream of a stable regional energy market could remain elusive.
Her comments come amid mounting concern over fuel supply interruptions that have hampered electricity generation and economic growth in several West African nations.
WAPCo is now urging regional leaders to prioritize cross-border cooperation, create transparent payment structures, and work collectively to protect the future of energy in the sub-region.
