A six-year-old girl has lost her life after reportedly drowning in an uncovered septic tank at Liberty Estate while searching for water, sparking outrage among residents over worsening water shortages in the community.
The victim, identified as Abi, is said to have gone to fetch water near a neighbour’s house on Sunday, May 24, 2026, when she accidentally fell into the uncovered septic tank.
Residents said attempts to save the child were unsuccessful, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
Many residents blamed the tragedy on the persistent lack of access to clean and reliable water, which they say forces children to move from house to house in search of water for their families.
“This beautiful soul has been lost simply because there is no water,” one distraught resident lamented.
Community members also raised concerns over safety hazards within the area, arguing that uncovered septic tanks and similar structures continue to endanger lives, especially children.
The heartbreaking incident has renewed calls for authorities to urgently address the water crisis in Gbetsile and enforce stricter safety regulations to ensure hazardous facilities are properly secured.
Residents say immediate intervention is needed to prevent future tragedies and protect vulnerable children in the community.
