The Weija Municipal Assembly is taking proactive steps to prevent loss of lives and property ahead of the anticipated spillage of the Weija Dam.
Speaking to Citi News, the Municipal Director, Bernard Mats Yingura, assured the public that the expected spillage is planned and controlled, not an emergency, but warned residents living near the dam to remain alert.
“This is not a surprise spillage. It’s a managed process, and we expect Ghana Water Limited to maintain control over it to avoid harm to nearby settlements,” Mr. Yingura said.
A key stakeholder meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, where authorities will finalize preparedness strategies and discuss safety measures. Following this, the Assembly plans to roll out an extensive community sensitization campaign to ensure residents are fully aware of the potential risks.
“People farming or engaging in water activities must stay informed. We’ll use announcements and community engagement to spread the word. It’s important we don’t take anyone by surprise,” Yingura stressed.
With rising water levels around the Weija Dam during the rainy season, past spillages have led to significant flooding. This time, officials hope that early warnings and coordinated planning will help avert disaster.
