In a strategic move to bolster development cooperation, the Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the World Bank Group, Wencai Zhang, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to Ghana during a high-level visit to the Ministry of Finance on Friday.
The visit, part of a broader engagement agenda between Ghana and the World Bank, saw Mr. Zhang meet with Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to explore opportunities for deepened collaboration, particularly in sectors considered pivotal to Ghana’s economic resilience—agriculture, transportation, and energy.
Dr. Ato Forson used the platform to press for expanded World Bank support, highlighting the critical need for investments that align with Ghana’s long-term growth ambitions. He emphasized agriculture and energy as priority sectors, proposing the creation of a World Bank regional hub in Ghana to streamline project implementation and improve coordination on development initiatives.
“The establishment of a regional office in Accra will not only boost efficiency but also signal confidence in Ghana as a regional leader in economic transformation,” Dr. Forson suggested.
Mr. Zhang responded positively, expressing the World Bank’s readiness to scale up its support—particularly in agriculture, where he said the Bank’s global expertise could help transform Ghana’s sector into a driver of inclusive growth and food security.
“We have extensive experience in agricultural transformation and we are eager to share that with Ghana,” Zhang noted. He also pointed to current efforts to enhance Ghana’s energy infrastructure, stressing that reliable energy is fundamental to economic progress.
This visit reinforces the growing relationship between Ghana and the World Bank, with both sides keen on turning shared priorities into impactful action.
