A swift and tactical police operation has thwarted a brazen highway robbery attempt on the Bekwai-Fomena Highway in the Ashanti Region, resulting in the death of four armed suspects.
The suspects, believed to be part of a notorious gang operating in the Adansi enclave, had reportedly mounted a roadblock in an attempt to rob travelers on the busy highway. According to police sources, a distress call from victims prompted a rapid response, culminating in a gun battle between the suspects and law enforcement officers.
Four of the suspected robbers were fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire. However, two other members of the gang, who sustained gunshot wounds, managed to flee into a nearby forest, prompting an ongoing manhunt to bring them to justice.
The Ashanti South Police Command, which led the operation, has confirmed the incident and assured the public that a full briefing will be held on Monday, April 14, to provide additional details.
Meanwhile, residents and commuters in the affected areas have lauded the police for their decisive action, describing it as a much-needed response to the rising spate of highway robberies that have gripped the region in recent months.
Investigations are currently underway to establish the identities of the deceased suspects and unravel the full circumstances surrounding the attempted robbery.
Police have reiterated their commitment to enhancing security in the region and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.
