In a bold move to reinforce their goalkeeping department, FC Barcelona have secured the services of Espanyol shot-stopper Joan Garcia, fending off reported interest from Arsenal and Manchester United. The Spanish giants activated Garcia’s €25 million (£21.3 million) release clause, locking him into a six-year contract set to commence officially on Friday, June 21, 2025.
At just 24, Garcia has emerged as one of Spain’s brightest young goalkeepers, making headlines last season by recording the highest number of saves (146) in La Liga—a stat that proved crucial in keeping Espanyol afloat in the top flight. His standout performances also earned him a gold medal with Spain’s Olympic team in Paris 2024, though he is yet to debut for the senior national team.
Barcelona’s aggressive pursuit of Garcia is seen as a strategic move to ensure long-term stability between the posts, especially after an injury-riddled season for first-choice keeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who missed most of last season due to a ruptured patella tendon.
With veteran Wojciech Szczesny set to leave the club at the end of June following a short-term emergency spell—during which he helped Barcelona clinch the La Liga title—the Catalans were in urgent need of a reliable backup and potential heir to Ter Stegen.
Garcia’s decision to remain in Spain, despite interest from England’s top clubs, signals a commitment to both continuity and ambition. For Barcelona, the signing not only strengthens their goalkeeping ranks but also sends a clear message: the future is being built now, with young talent at its core.
