General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has come out strongly to dispel allegations that the party’s upcoming presidential primaries are designed to give an unfair advantage to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia or any other aspirant.
His comments follow speculation that the recently announced primary date—January 31, 2026—could influence the internal dynamics in favour of the Vice President, who is widely seen as a frontrunner.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s *The Point of View* on Wednesday, June 18, Kodua described the accusations as “surprising” and “baseless,” insisting that the NPP’s track record proves its commitment to transparent and democratic electoral processes.
“I will be very surprised for anyone to think that an election that is yet to be conducted will favour a particular candidate,” he remarked, pointing out that the party’s structures have historically allowed for competition without manipulation.
Kodua also dismissed concerns over the order in which internal elections are held—whether from the polling station upwards or starting at the national level—as inconsequential to fairness. According to him, the process does not inherently benefit any particular camp, noting that a majority of current executives often retain their positions regardless of sequencing.
He stated, “Whether you start from polling station to national or the reverse, it doesn’t skew the outcome. It’s the same people who, in many cases, continue to occupy the roles.”
The General Secretary reiterated that the primary date was not arbitrarily selected but was the result of recommendations from the party’s Constitution Review Committee and subsequently ratified by the National Council.
With preparations for the 2026 presidential primaries intensifying, Kodua’s remarks appear aimed at calming internal discontent and reinforcing the NPP’s image as a party governed by rule of law rather than political favouritism.
