Gov’t Halts Energy Levy Implementation Amid Global Market Uncertainties to Protect Ghanaian Consumers

The government has announced a suspension of the proposed Energy Levy, following concerns over volatile global economic conditions that threaten to increase costs for Ghanaian consumers.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, speaking in Parliament, highlighted that the decision was taken in response to shifting trends in international oil markets, which could lead to higher export expenses and exacerbate the financial strain on households.

Originally planned to capitalise on declining petroleum prices, the Energy Levy’s implementation has been paused as the government prioritizes shielding citizens from potential price hikes during this fragile economic recovery period.

“This measure demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians, especially at a time when many are already feeling economic pressures,” Mr. Ayariga said.

He assured the public that the government remains vigilant, closely tracking global and local economic developments to determine the best path forward regarding energy sector financing.

Further clarifications and details on the suspension and its impact on government revenues are expected from the Minister of Energy in an upcoming parliamentary session.

This move forms part of broader government efforts to adapt swiftly to changing economic landscapes and maintain stability for the populace.
