Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary at the Office of ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to exercise caution and ensure any efforts to remove Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa are based on concrete legal grounds rather than political motives.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 30, Adjei criticized what he described as a long-standing political campaign by the NDC targeting the current EC leadership. He emphasized that removals of public officials must adhere strictly to constitutional procedures and cannot be driven by partisan retaliation.
“The move to remove Jean Mensa should not be a tit-for-tat reaction,” Adjei said, referring to the previous removal of former EC Chair Charlotte Osei over procurement violations. “There must be substantive evidence to justify such an action. Speculation and political grievances are not enough.”
His remarks respond directly to recent calls by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who has demanded the dismissal of the EC’s top officials, citing alleged incompetence and unresolved election disputes like those in Ablekuma North.
Adjei warned that bypassing due process risks undermining Ghana’s democratic stability and electoral integrity. “Removing an Electoral Commissioner without solid proof of wrongdoing threatens the very institutions that safeguard our democracy,” he stated.
The former presidential aide’s comments highlight the need for calm, evidence-based discourse as Ghana navigates ongoing tensions around electoral management.
