Africa’s fast-growing enthusiasm for AirBadminton reached new heights as the continent’s top teams battled for continental glory at the 2025 African AirBadminton Championship, hosted at the scenic Laboma Beach Resort in Accra. But beyond the medals, it was the sport itself that emerged as the biggest winner.
Egypt’s mixed relay team rose to the occasion, overpowering Nigeria 60-46 in a pulsating finale to claim gold and secure a coveted ticket to the inaugural Badminton World Federation (BWF) AirBadminton World Cup, set for December 11–14, 2025, in Sharjah, UAE. Nigeria, as silver medallists, also qualified for the global tournament.
The high-octane showdown was a showcase of grit, athleticism, and tactical brilliance as fans on the sandy shores of Laboma watched Africa’s badminton future unfold in real time. With thunderous smashes, agile footwork, and clever teamwork, both teams gave spectators a thrilling experience.
Mauritius and Benin took the third and fourth places, respectively, underlining the rising competitiveness of AirBadminton across the continent.
While Egypt’s win will dominate the headlines, the broader story was about how AirBadminton — a dynamic, outdoor adaptation of the traditional sport — is taking root across Africa. Designed for beaches, parks, hard courts, and even streets, the sport is breathing new life into badminton by making it accessible, affordable, and community-oriented.
“AirBadminton is more than a game — it’s a movement,” said an event official. “This championship has shown us that Africa has the talent and passion to be a global force in the sport.”
Ghana’s hosting of the event was widely praised for its vibrant atmosphere, excellent organisation, and strong local support. The Laboma Beach venue provided a stunning backdrop, reinforcing AirBadminton’s appeal as a sport that blends performance with leisure.
As Egypt and Nigeria prepare for the global stage, African badminton has sent a powerful message — the continent is ready to compete, innovate, and inspire through this exciting outdoor evolution of the sport.
