In the wake of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including two serving ministers, the Minority in Parliament has called for a moment of national reflection and unity, describing the loss as a sobering reminder of the shared humanity behind public service.
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, in a heartfelt statement on Wednesday, emphasised that the catastrophe transcends politics, affecting families, institutions, and the soul of the nation itself.
“These are not just public figures we have lost — they were fathers, brothers, friends, and patriots,” the statement said. “Behind every portfolio lies a beating heart. We mourn with their families and with the entire nation.”
The Minority’s message hailed the fallen leaders for their unwavering commitment to national progress, singling out Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed as exemplary ministers who served with intellect, empathy, and purpose.
“Dr. Boamah was a scholar with a soldier’s courage. Dr. Murtala Mohammed championed the environment with a depth that reached beyond party lines. Their legacy must be protected through our collective will to continue what they stood for.”
The statement extended deepest sympathies to the families of all eight victims — which included government officials and military officers — and urged Ghanaians to honour their memories by renewing commitment to national service, security, and sustainability.
Among those who perished were:
-
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
-
Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
-
Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
-
Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC National Vice Chairman
-
Mr. Samuel Aboagye, former NDC parliamentary candidate
-
Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Ghana Air Force
-
Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, Ghana Air Force
-
Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Ghana Air Force
Flags are flying at half-mast across the country, and a national period of mourning has been declared. The President is expected to lead tributes in the coming days as preparations begin for official state funerals.
“Let us channel our grief into action — action that strengthens the democratic pillars they upheld, and the national values they cherished,” the Minority Leader urged.
