The Ghana Police Service has assured residents of Akwatia that their safety is a top priority during Tuesday’s by-election, urging voters to turn out without fear of intimidation.
Director-General of Operations, COP Vans Baba Gariba, told journalists that police officers deployed to the constituency will not only maintain order but also engage directly with the community to build confidence in the security process.
“Our personnel will be going around the communities, talking to people, and assuring them that the police are here to protect—not intimidate—them. We want every eligible voter to freely exercise their civic rights,” COP Gariba stressed.
He explained that while over 5,500 police officers have been positioned at polling stations and electoral areas, the emphasis is on professionalism, transparency, and neutrality.
In a bid to maintain order, the police have also banned the use of motorbikes within 100 metres of polling centres and have announced that access to the collation centre will be restricted to accredited officials only.
Community leaders and electoral observers have welcomed the measures, describing them as necessary steps to prevent disturbances and to guarantee a peaceful and credible process.
