Education Minister Rejects Bulletproof Vest, Calls for Peace in Bawku

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has made a symbolic appeal for peace in Bawku, stressing that schools cannot thrive in an environment of conflict and fear.

During a working visit to the Upper East Region, the Minister interacted with candidates of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Zebilla Senior High Technical School, where he assessed the impact of the ongoing Bawku conflict on education.

In a striking moment, Mr. Iddrisu declined to wear a bulletproof vest offered to him for protection, explaining that such gear was out of place in a learning environment.

“I refused to put it on because a bulletproof jacket does not belong in an academic environment. It does not create the conducive atmosphere needed for learning to thrive,” he said.

“No to War, Yes to Education”

The Minister urged students to rise above the difficult conditions created by the conflict, reminding them that education remains their most reliable weapon against ignorance and poverty.

“We need to say no to war, no to conflict. Education remains our surest bet to fight ignorance and poverty, so grab the opportunity and give it your best,” he told the students.

He also expressed concern that students in conflict-affected areas face a disadvantage since examiners do not consider the disruptions they endure, yet they are graded under the same conditions as their peers in stable regions.

Infrastructure Boost Still on Track

While appealing for peace, Mr. Iddrisu reaffirmed government’s commitment to addressing structural challenges in education. He disclosed that in 2026, GH₵1 billion will be released from the GETFund to tackle infrastructure deficits in schools nationwide, with the ultimate goal of phasing out the double-track system in senior high schools.

Call for Lasting Stability

The Minister concluded with a plea for reconciliation in Bawku, stressing that without peace, efforts to improve education and rebuild the city would be undermined.

“Lasting peace must be restored in Bawku so that the city can be rebuilt and a serene environment for education restored,” he emphasized.
