President John Dramani Mahama has directed the establishment of dedicated courts to handle cases arising from the Auditor-General’s reports, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen public accountability and recover misused state funds.
This follows a high-level meeting held on Monday, October 20, 2025, between the President, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, and the Auditor-General at the Jubilee House. The discussions centred on strategies to ensure that audit findings translate into concrete legal and financial actions rather than remaining mere administrative recommendations.
According to a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the proposed special courts will have the mandate to enforce surcharges, disallowances, and prosecute individuals or institutions found culpable of financial misconduct uncovered through audits.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the initiative reflects President Mahama’s commitment to closing long-standing gaps between audit accountability and judicial enforcement.
“For too long, audit findings have not resulted in timely recovery or prosecution. The creation of these special courts demonstrates government’s resolve to ensure that every cedi lost through mismanagement or corruption is recovered,” the statement noted.
The move is also expected to enhance collaboration between key accountability institutions — including the Office of the Auditor-General, the Office of the Attorney-General, and the Judiciary — to streamline processes for sanctioning offenders and retrieving misappropriated funds.
Analysts have long argued that Ghana’s audit reports often expose financial irregularities without adequate follow-up action. The new measure, therefore, signals a shift toward a more enforcement-driven accountability framework.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader anti-corruption agenda aimed at restoring public trust in state institutions and promoting prudent management of public resources.
