Parliament has approved a substantial GH¢9.8 billion allocation for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for the 2026 financial year, with the bulk of the funding directed toward sustaining the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy and expanding educational infrastructure.
A dominant portion of the allocation—GH¢4.2 billion—has been committed to supporting the Free SHS programme, reaffirming government’s continued investment in access to secondary education.
The tertiary education sector is set to receive GH¢1.5 billion, signalling strong backing for higher education development. Within this amount, GH¢300 million has been dedicated to the GETFund scholarship scheme. The funding will cater for continuing students and provide fresh sponsorship opportunities for beneficiaries pursuing academic programmes both locally and abroad.
Infrastructure development also features prominently in the 2026 funding formula. An amount of GH¢230 million has been earmarked for the completion of ongoing basic school projects, while GH¢310 million will finance the construction of new educational facilities.
The allocation underscores a dual focus on maintaining flagship social interventions and addressing infrastructure gaps across the education value chain, positioning GETFund as a central pillar in Ghana’s human capital development agenda for 2026.
