President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major policy shift to support farmers, directing that fertilisers be distributed free of charge this year in response to losses caused by last season’s food glut.
The intervention, unveiled during a sod-cutting ceremony for a new Farmer Service Centre in the Afram Plains South Constituency, aims to ease the financial burden on farmers who struggled with falling prices and unsold produce.
The President explained that an oversupply of crops such as cereals, grains, and vegetables led to a sharp decline in farm gate prices, leaving many smallholder farmers operating at a loss. To help them recover, the government has replaced the usual subsidised fertiliser programme with a fully free distribution for the 2026 farming season.
He noted that the move forms part of broader efforts to revitalise the agricultural sector, improve productivity, and strengthen food security nationwide.
The initiative is also expected to encourage increased cultivation while providing relief to farmers affected by market imbalances, as government intensifies support for the country’s agriculture value chain.
