Concerns over indiscriminate waste disposal have come to the fore in Adentan following flash floods that swept through parts of Lakeside after a brief but intense downpour.
The flooding, which occurred on April 2 after about 30 minutes of rainfall, affected communities including Nyamekrom and Room 6, exposing persistent drainage challenges and raising questions about environmental sanitation practices in the area.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) attributed the incident largely to choked gutters caused by the dumping of refuse into drainage systems. They warned that individuals who continue to block drains would face legal consequences.
In response to the situation, the Member of Parliament for Adentan, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, has directed immediate dredging of gutters to restore water flow and prevent further flooding. During a visit to the affected communities, he indicated that engineers had been engaged to undertake urgent desilting works as a short-term intervention.
He added that longer-term solutions were also being considered to address the recurring problem and improve drainage infrastructure in the municipality.
Meanwhile, Assembly Member for the Man-hee Electoral Area, Bright Afedor, welcomed the emergency response but stressed that lasting results would depend on a shift in public behaviour. He urged residents to desist from dumping waste into gutters, warning that continued disregard for sanitation rules would undermine all flood prevention efforts.
The incident has reignited calls for stronger enforcement of sanitation laws and increased community responsibility to reduce the risk of flooding in rapidly growing urban areas.
