A significant transition is underway in Ghana’s mining industry as the government selects a wholly Ghanaian-owned company to take over operations of one of the country’s key gold assets.
The Engineers and Planners Limited has emerged as the successful bidder for the Damang Gold Mine after outperforming competitors in a rigorous technical and financial evaluation process overseen by the Minerals Commission.
Out of four companies that submitted bids, only two met the strict eligibility requirements, with Engineers and Planners ultimately securing the contract after achieving the highest combined score. The company also demonstrated strong financial backing, exceeding the required $500 million threshold for project development.
The decision, approved by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, marks a notable shift toward increasing local participation in Ghana’s extractive sector.
Previously operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited, the Damang mine is expected to benefit from renewed investment and plans to extend its operational lifespan beyond a decade under the new management.
Government officials say the move reinforces efforts to promote indigenous capacity in the mining industry while ensuring that strategic national assets continue to contribute meaningfully to economic growth.
