…Ga Dangbe Leaders Appeal to Mahama for Pardon
The Gborbu Wulomo, along with elders, chiefs, and the entire Ga Dangbe State, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to review the case of a woman who was sentenced to one year in prison for stealing food to feed her hungry daughter.
The woman, who is serving a jail sentence, admitted to stealing some spoon-full of Milo, but explained that her actions were driven by desperation after her young child persistently cried from hunger.
Despite her plea, she was convicted and jailed for a year, a decision that has sparked widespread concern and calls for justice.
According to reports, the woman had previously served her late guardian with unwavering commitment, leading the deceased to will an entire house to her. However, family members of the guardian allegedly opposed her inheritance and sought ways to strip her of the property.
It is alleged that these family members orchestrated her arrest on minor theft charges, ensuring she was prosecuted and imprisoned.
While she was behind bars, the same individuals reportedly moved to sell the house while she is in prison.
Concerns have also been raised about the role of law enforcement and the judiciary in the case.
Some claim that police officers and prosecutors were influenced by the woman’s adversaries to push the case to court rather than treating it as a misdemeanor.
Even more troubling, there are allegations that the presiding judge, who was not initially involved in the property dispute, took an unusual interest in the matter and ordered the sale of the woman’s home.
Traditional leaders of the Ga Dangbe State, led by Nii Ayi Ana Konteh Il, Ga Abola Paramount Stool Dzaasetse, have described the situation as a miscarriage of justice and are urging President Mahama to intervene by granting the woman a presidential pardon and launching a full-scale investigation into the circumstances of her conviction.
They believe that if the allegations of judicial manipulation and undue influence prove true, corrective action must be taken to ensure fairness and prevent similar injustices in the future.
The case has sparked public debate on the treatment of vulnerable individuals in the justice system, with many questioning whether the woman’s punishment was proportionate to her offense.
The call for a review continues to gain momentum, as pressure mounts on authorities to take action in the pursuit of justice.
