The People’s National Convention (PNC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the New Patriotic Party National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, over comments allegedly threatening to “weaponise” party youth to make the country ungovernable.
Addressing a press conference in Kumasi after a meeting with regional chairmen of the PNC, the party’s National Chairman, Samson Asaki Awingobit, described the comments as reckless, inflammatory and a direct threat to Ghana’s peace and democratic stability.
“We want them to put such a person before the law court. He should be immediately arrested,” Mr Awingobit declared, while urging the government and security agencies to act swiftly against political figures whose statements could incite violence.
He specifically called on the National Security Coordinator, the Inspector-General of Police and other security institutions to enforce the law without fear or favour.
According to the PNC Chairman, political leaders must exercise restraint and avoid rhetoric capable of provoking unrest in a country governed by democratic principles under the 1992 Constitution.
Mr Awingobit warned that Ghana could not afford to trivialise politically charged comments involving violence and weapons, especially at a time when security agencies were retrieving illegal arms from civilians.
Drawing parallels with the 1994 Rwanda genocide, he cautioned that history had shown how inflammatory political language by influential actors could escalate into national tragedy if ignored.
The PNC Chairman also condemned remarks allegedly made by another NPP communications member threatening attacks on the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) should opposition members face arrests.
“These are reckless statements. It should not come from leadership of a bigger political party like the NPP,” he stressed.
Mr Awingobit maintained that no political group or individual should place themselves above the authority of the state, insisting that Ghana’s democracy could only thrive when laws were applied equally to all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
He said the PNC could not remain silent on matters threatening national cohesion, peace and security.
The press conference followed a closed-door meeting between the national executives of the PNC and regional chairmen to discuss internal restructuring, party reorganisation and strategies to rebuild the party’s grassroots support ahead of the 2028 general elections.
