The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has moved to enforce party discipline by ordering an immediate halt to all unofficial presidential campaign activities ahead of the party’s next flagbearer election.
The directive was issued following a high-level meeting between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama on May 29, 2026, amid growing concerns over reports of premature political mobilisation and endorsements by individuals and groups within the governing party.
In a statement released after the meeting, the Council cautioned party members against engaging in activities that could undermine unity and distract the party from its governance responsibilities.
According to the Council, the NDC’s immediate priority is to support the government’s national development agenda and deliver on commitments made to Ghanaians, rather than engage in internal succession battles.
The statement emphasized that all party members are expected to dedicate their efforts toward advancing the government’s “Resetting Agenda,” which seeks to address economic and social challenges facing the country.
“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country and improve the lives of Ghanaians,” the Council stated.
The Council further reminded members that the NDC Constitution clearly outlines the process for electing a presidential candidate. Under Article 42, the authority to determine the timing and venue of presidential primaries rests solely with the National Executive Committee (NEC).
It noted that until the NEC formally announces guidelines and timelines for the selection of a presidential candidate, no individual or group has the mandate to campaign, organise endorsements, or mobilise support for any prospective aspirant.
As a result, the Council directed all persons involved in promotional activities, public endorsements, lobbying efforts, and other forms of early campaigning to discontinue such actions immediately.
The move is aimed at preventing unnecessary internal divisions and ensuring that the party remains focused on governance and national development.
The Council also appealed to party faithful across the country to maintain unity and avoid actions that could create tensions within the party at a time when the government is working to fulfill its electoral promises.
It stressed that there would be an appropriate time for leadership contests but insisted that the current priority should be delivering results for the Ghanaian people.
“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the statement concluded.
