Communicator for the United Party (UP), Andrew Appiah Danquah, has urged political actors to adopt a united approach in ongoing discussions surrounding the LGBTQ+ bill, stressing the need to prioritise national interest over partisan considerations.
Speaking on TV3, he said the debate should not be framed through party lines, but rather as a collective national position on a sensitive legislative matter.
He argued that Parliament had already shown significant consensus on the proposed amendments and should build on that cooperation instead of allowing political divisions to resurface.
“We are all in agreement as to why these amendments are necessary,” he said, adding that lawmakers should focus on areas of shared understanding rather than points of disagreement.
According to him, issues of national values and identity should not become tools for deep political polarisation, insisting that unity is essential in such debates.
Appiah Danquah further suggested that the controversy surrounding the bill has, in part, been amplified by political strategy rather than genuine policy differences.
He maintained that lawmakers across the political divide had already demonstrated the ability to collaborate and should continue to do so in the national interest.
“Let all of us come together as one. We are representatives of the people and must act accordingly,” he stated.
