A devastating head-on collision between a passenger bus and a container truck has claimed at least 15 lives and left 25 others injured at Peki-Tsame in the Volta Region.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, near Peki Senior High School, triggering a rapid emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The accident involved a Mercedes-Benz container truck with registration number WR 1553-C, travelling from Nkwanta to Accra, and a Mercedes-Benz passenger bus, GR 3215-E, which was moving from Battor to Kabiti in the Oti Region.
According to the GNFS, a total of 40 passengers were on board both vehicles, comprising 21 men, 15 women and four children.
Firefighters from the Peki Fire Station conducted a rescue operation at the scene, managing to free trapped victims from the mangled wreckage before transporting the injured to the Peki Government Hospital.
In all, 25 survivors—made up of 23 adults and two children—are receiving treatment, while the bodies of the 15 deceased, including nine men and six women, have been deposited at the hospital morgue for identification and preservation.
Preliminary investigations have yet to determine the cause of the crash, with authorities continuing their inquiries into the circumstances that led to the deadly collision.
The Ghana National Fire Service has expressed condolences to bereaved families and renewed its call for motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and avoid risky driving behaviours such as dangerous overtaking, which remain major contributors to road fatalities in the country.
The tragedy adds to a growing number of road crashes on Ghana’s highways, raising renewed concerns over road safety enforcement and driver discipline.
