Residents of the Anyako Electoral Area in the Keta Municipality could soon regain representation at the District Assembly following confirmation by the Electoral Commission (EC) that preparations are underway to conduct by-elections to fill vacancies across the country.
The assurance was contained in a letter dated June 18, 2026, signed by Dr. Bossman E. Asare, Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, on behalf of the EC Chairperson.
The correspondence was addressed to Mr. Gilbert Korbla Keklie, who had petitioned the Commission over the prolonged vacancy in the Anyako Electoral Area and the need to restore democratic representation for residents.
In its response, the EC affirmed its constitutional and statutory responsibility to organize by-elections whenever vacancies arise in District Assemblies. The Commission cited provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as well as relevant sections of the Constitution, as the legal basis for its actions.
According to the Commission, efforts are ongoing to ensure that all vacant assembly seats nationwide are filled through democratic elections, including the vacancy in the Anyako Electoral Area.
The development has been welcomed by residents who have been without an elected Assembly Member since the former representative, Wisdom Seade, was appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta, creating a vacancy in the electoral area.
Mr. Keklie described the EC’s response as a positive step toward restoring local representation and ensuring that the concerns and development needs of the community are adequately represented at the District Assembly.
He noted that the absence of an Assembly Member has affected the area’s participation in local governance and decision-making processes, making the conduct of the by-election increasingly important.
According to him, the move also demonstrates the importance of citizen engagement in safeguarding constitutional rights and holding public institutions accountable to their democratic obligations.
With the Electoral Commission indicating that work is progressing toward the conduct of the election, stakeholders in the Anyako Electoral Area are being encouraged to prepare for the eventual announcement of a date for the by-election.
Community leaders, political actors and eligible voters are expected to play active roles in the process as the Commission works to ensure that no electoral area remains without representation for an extended period.
