The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has commenced the collection of data on residents affected by the June 29 floods as part of efforts to provide relief and other forms of assistance to victims.
Speaking on Joy News, the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, said the Assembly was working closely with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, which has jurisdiction over the worst-affected area, to coordinate the response.
According to him, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, is collaborating with the Municipal Chief Executive of Korle Klottey to ensure that all affected residents are identified and receive the necessary support.
“Data is currently being collected, and we are hopeful that the affected persons will receive some level of assistance,” he stated.
Beyond the immediate relief efforts, Mr. Ankrah disclosed that the two assemblies are also developing measures to decongest market areas to reduce the risk of future disasters.
He explained that discussions are underway to remove congestion within the affected markets, noting that overcrowding has contributed to recurring fire outbreaks and other safety concerns.
The exercise follows the devastating June 29 floods, which impacted several communities across the Greater Accra Region and triggered ongoing assessments by local authorities to support victims and strengthen disaster prevention measures.
