John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaian retirees that his government will increase pensions as the country’s economy strengthens, saying those who dedicated their lives to national development deserve improved financial support in retirement.
Speaking at the annual State Luncheon for Senior Citizens in Accra, the President said the government’s economic recovery agenda is intended to improve the welfare of both active workers and pensioners.
He pledged that as economic conditions continue to improve, the administration will review not only wages and salaries for the working population but also pensions for retired citizens.
President Mahama said older Ghanaians should enjoy financial security after years of service to the nation, describing it as a commitment his government is determined to fulfil.
He also stressed that caring for senior citizens should not be left to government alone, urging families, communities, religious organisations and the wider public to play active roles in supporting the elderly.
According to him, Ghana must ensure that older people who once cared for others are not neglected in their later years.
The President further encouraged senior citizens to register with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares, to help cover the cost of treating non-communicable diseases, which are more common among older people.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare and social protection programmes to enable senior citizens to live healthier and more dignified lives.
The annual State Luncheon for Senior Citizens is organised to honour the contributions of elderly Ghanaians to national development while providing a platform for government to engage them on issues affecting their welfare.
